Patience, time and more patience is what it takes to make this blissful dessert. I was always under the impression that the Greeks were the masterminds behind this sweet dish; however my recent research says different. Many ethnic groups claim they discovered baklava – this dessert is that delicious that everyone wants to believe that they are the geniuses behind it. We may never know who was responsible for this delectable dessert, but the truth is...it doesn't matter!
Ingredients:
2 phyllo pastry boxes (I use Presidents Choice) defrost in fridge overnight
4 cups of walnuts (chopped fine)
½ cup of white sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 cup of melted butter
1 ½ cup of honey
Grease the bottom of a 9x13 cookie sheet with butter
In large bowl, mix the walnuts, sugar and cinnamon.
Place 6 sheets of phyllo pastry (adding butter to each layer with a brush). Then add 1 cup of the nut mixture. Repeat this step 4 more times.
Cut the baklava into pieces, about halfway through (4x4) = 32 pieces
Cook at 300 degrees for 1 hour
Warm up honey on medium heat.
Pour hot honey over baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven.
Cool on rack for at least 1 hour, then cover and leave at room temperature until serving (I prefer it cold from the fridge).
