Does your stomach ever hunger for a savoury snack -- something with a flaky crust and a meaty filling? This recipe might be the answer to your craving. Sausage rolls to Nigerians are like hamburgers to Canadians; they are extremely popular and almost every fast food restaurant has their own version. Sausage rolls are a distinctive Nigerian snack (also common in many European countries), often made from ground sausage meat and pastry.
Ingredients:
2 pounds of lean ground beef (or ground pork)
1 teaspoon of curry powder
2 teaspoons of black pepper or dry red pepper
1 teaspoon of onion salt
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of thyme
1 magi cube
salt
3 cups of flour
2 sticks of butter cut into cubes (room temperature)
1/3 cup of water
1 egg
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl add the flour and butter cubes
Use your fingers to work the butter into the flour. It should look like breadcrumbs.
Add the water in increments (you may need to add more then 1/3 cups). Begin to knead it until it forms a ball. Note: this could take up to 5 minutes.
Set the dough aside. In a medium bowl mix your ground beef with the seasonings.
Roll one half of the dough into a long sheet. Cut uneven edges off one side of the dough.
Add the rolled meat 1 inch from the edge of the dough.
Gently roll the dough. Dip one finger in a bowl of water and swipe the edge of the dough to seal the edges. Cut off extra dough.
Start cutting the long roll into 2 inch pieces. Use a sharp knife to cut a slash across the top.
Transfer the rolls to a baking sheet layered with foil and some flour.
Whisk one egg and brush the egg wash onto the sausage rolls.
Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes.
